No Partners Required!
Partners are not necessary for any classes offered by Augusta Tango Club, or to attend practicas or milongas. However, we cannot guarantee there will be gender balance at any event, or class. We will rotate partners. If you do come to class with a partner, you will be encouraged to rotate, but will not be forced to do so.
Do not mistake “dancing with the “stars” tango with social Argentine Tango. Performance tango is for the stage. The “moves” are memorized by the couple. Performance tango is not restricted in space; social tango is. ”Dancing on your tile” is a priority with social Argentine Tango. With social dancing, you are dancing not only with your partner, but with the other dancers on the floor. it takes time and practice to learn this dance. One of our mentors once asked an older BA milonguero (social Tango dancer-who had been dancing for 40 years), “how is your dancing”? He said, “well the last 10 years my walk has gotten better”.
There are dances (called milongas) and practice sessions (called practicas) that we provide at various locations in the Augusta, Ga./Aiken SC /CSRA. Argentine Tango is not “just another ballroom dance”. Social Argentine Tango is danced with extreme connection and focus on your partner and the music.
There are many “styles” but generally there are 2 broad styles of the social dance == open verses close embrace. Our experience is that most social Argentine Tango is danced in close embrace. However, the dancer’s comfort is the main issue. To expand your available partnerships, we teach both styles and encourage our dancers to dance both.
Social tango has its own etiquette and is not competitive in nature. Although our club members do perform locally and beyond, our main emphasis is on social Argentine Tango dancing. We believe it is an amazing dance, and once you are hooked, it is like no other dance in the world.
